Bars of the crib should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.

Wires and the hanging items in the room.

The curtains and the stings of the window blinds should not be kept hanging. This can attract the baby and strangulate him. The electrical fittings like wires should not be kept dangling. The unused plugs should be covered with a plastic plug cover. Table cloths of proper size may be used to keep the baby away from the danger. The dangling wires may be covered with a good casing.

Maintaining and cleaning the room.

The floor of the room should be kept clean. Tiny items such as coins lying of the floor must be taken care of. Remove the items on the cabinet and table tops as the baby may swallow them. Maintaining the damaged furniture should not be overlooked.

Keep away the medicines.

All the medicines, lotions and the cleaning liquids are to be kept away from the baby. Keeping indoor plants in the room may be avoided as the baby may taste the toxic chemicals on the plants and in the mud. These items may be kept in the locked cabinets for the young one’s safety.

Avoid holding other items.

Parents should avoid items like matchsticks, cigarettes and hot beverages as they can burn the child or cause accidents. Items like grapes, pop corns , nuts , raisins must not be given to the child below one year. These items get stuck in the throat and choke the baby.

Initially a parent may find baby proofing as time consuming and strenuous. But with proper precaution by keeping the threats in mind, a parent can provide a safe home environment for the baby.
